Hackers have accessed the personal information of more than ten million subscribers to a popular online game developed by one of the industry's leaders, Nexon.
The Korea Communications Commission and Nexon, developer of the game in question, Maple Story, said Friday that the company's backup server was hacked, resulting in the leak of 13 million subscribers' personal information. Nexon has a total of 18-million subscribers.
Nexon confirmed the leak on Thursday and informed the KCC at around five o'clock Friday afternoon. It also asked the police to investigate on Friday.
This is the second largest ever private information leak after the personal information of some 35-million subscribers of the social network service (SNS) Cyworld and portal site Nate were leaked in August. A KCC team is investigating to determine if there was any negligence on the part of Nexon and whether the game developer has violated laws on privacy.
